WinSCP: Secure File Transfer Client for Windows

WinSCP is an open-source Windows file transfer client offering secure protocols, flexible workflows, and a user-focused interface. Actively maintained with regular 6.x-series releases, the application supports a range of transfer methods, scripting and automation, and multiple deployment options suitable for individual and enterprise environments.

Protocol Support and Security

Broad protocol coverage: Native support for SFTP (SSH), SCP, FTP, FTPS, WebDAV and Amazon S3 enables connections to traditional servers and cloud storage endpoints.

Encryption and authentication: Public-key authentication, SSH host-key verification, and configurable cipher settings provide encrypted transfers and connection integrity.

Transfer reliability: Resume and retry capabilities, background transfers, and synchronization controls assist with large or interrupted transfers.

Interface and Productivity Features

Flexible layouts: Dual-pane (commander) and single-pane (Explorer) views accommodate different file-management preferences.

Integrated editor: Built-in text editing of remote files reduces round trips; temporary file handling and syntax-aware features streamline quick changes.

Directory synchronization: Bi-directional and mirror sync modes with comparison options support deployments, backups, and site updates.

Visual refinements: Recent builds include thumbnail previews, adjustable toolbar icon sizes, Segoe UI integration, and optional dark-theme session tabs for improved usability.

Scripting, Automation and Integrations

Command-line and scripting: Full scripting support and a command-line interface facilitate scheduled tasks, automated transfers, and integration with CI/CD pipelines.

Agent and authentication integrations: Compatibility with SSH agents (such as Pageant), keyboard-interactive and password methods enables varied authentication setups.

Custom actions: Configurable toolbar items, keyboard shortcuts, external editor support, and custom commands allow workflow tailoring.

Deployment and Maintenance

Multiple packages: Standard installer, portable (no-install) package, and source code are available for different deployment needs.

Enterprise deployment: MSI installers and silent-install options simplify mass deployment and integration with Active Directory environments.

Signed releases and changelogs: Official downloads include signed installers and checksums; regular changelogs document feature updates, fixes, and security patches.

Documentation and Community

Extensive documentation: Manuals, FAQs, and a searchable wiki provide configuration guidance and usage examples.

Community and transparency: Forums and an open-source codebase support issue reporting, feature discussion, and independent code inspection.

Typical Use Cases

IT administrators and DevOps teams requiring secure, scriptable file transfers and automated deployment workflows.

Developers and webmasters who need direct remote file editing, synchronization, and comparison tools.

Organizations seeking a Windows-native client that supports MSI deployment, auditing, and a wide range of protocols.

WinSCP combines protocol versatility, scripting capabilities, and an adaptable interface targeted at everyday remote file management on Windows. Downloads include installers, portable versions and source code, while ongoing releases and documented changelogs help maintain compatibility and security.
